Scared of the Dentist? How IV Sedation and Nitrous Oxide Work in Indianapolis

Patient relaxing during a dental exam at an Indianapolis dental office

Here’s something we hear almost every week at our Lafayette Road office: “I know I need work done. I just can’t make myself sit in the chair.” If that’s you, you’re in good company. Dental anxiety keeps a lot of people from getting care until a small problem turns into a painful one. The good news is that being nervous no longer means white-knuckling your way through a visit.

Why so many practices are going comfort-first

Dentistry has changed a lot in the past few years. More offices now plan the whole visit around comfort, from calmer rooms to clear explanations to real sedation options. We think that’s long overdue. A patient who feels safe is far more likely to come back for the cleaning that prevents the next root canal.

Nitrous oxide: the light option

Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is breathed through a small nose mask. Within a few minutes most people feel relaxed and a little floaty, but still awake and able to talk. It wears off quickly once the mask comes off, so you can usually drive yourself home and go back to work. Nitrous is a good fit for cleanings, fillings and patients with mild to moderate nerves. IV sedation: for bigger work or bigger fear

IV sedation is given through a small line in your arm. You stay breathing on your own, but you’ll be deeply relaxed, and many patients remember little or nothing of the procedure afterward. It’s often used for wisdom teeth removal, implant surgery, multiple extractions or for anyone whose anxiety is severe. Because the effects last a while, you’ll need a friend or family member to drive you home and stay with you for a few hours. See our IV sedation page for details.

Which one is right for you?

That depends on the treatment, your health history and how anxious you feel. Before any sedation, we review your medications and medical conditions so we can choose the safest option. Some patients start with nitrous for a cleaning and find that’s all they need. Others prefer to get several treatments done in one IV visit instead of many shorter appointments.
