Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom Teeth Extraction in Indianapolis

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to develop, usually appearing between the late teens and mid-twenties. Because most jaws do not have enough room for them, they often become trapped beneath the gums, grow in crooked, or only partially erupt. These problems can lead to pain, infection, and damage to healthy teeth. At Olive Branch Dentists in Indianapolis, we provide gentle wisdom teeth extractions with sedation options, including IV sedation, so the experience is as comfortable as possible.

Reasons Wisdom Teeth Are Removed

Not every wisdom tooth causes trouble, but we often recommend removal when wisdom teeth:

  • Are impacted beneath the gums or within the jawbone
  • Grow in tilted or sideways and press against neighboring molars
  • Break through only partway, trapping food and bacteria under the gum
  • Cause repeated swelling, infection, or pain
  • Develop decay that is hard to reach and treat
  • Contribute to crowding or undo the results of braces or aligners
  • Form cysts that can harm the jawbone and nearby teeth

Common Wisdom Tooth Symptoms

  • Aching or soreness in the back of the mouth
  • Swollen, tender, or bleeding gums behind the last molars
  • Jaw stiffness or trouble opening wide
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste
  • Headaches or ear pain connected to jaw discomfort

Even without symptoms, routine exams and X-rays help us catch developing problems early. Removing wisdom teeth at a younger age typically means simpler treatment and a quicker recovery.

Your Wisdom Teeth Consultation

We begin with an exam and digital X-rays, plus 3D imaging when helpful, to see each wisdom tooth’s position, root shape, and relationship to nerves and sinuses. We will walk you through our findings, explain whether removal is recommended, and tell you exactly what to expect from treatment and recovery.

Sedation Options for Wisdom Teeth Removal

It is normal to feel nervous about having wisdom teeth taken out. In addition to local anesthesia, we offer nitrous oxide, oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation. IV sedation is a popular choice when several or impacted wisdom teeth are being removed, since it provides deep relaxation and most patients remember very little. If you choose oral or IV sedation, please plan for a responsible adult to drive you home.

Recovering After Your Extraction

  • Keep gentle pressure on gauze pads for the first few hours to control bleeding.
  • Use cold compresses on your cheeks, 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off, for the first 24 to 48 hours.
  • Stick to soft, cool foods like yogurt, applesauce, pudding, mashed potatoes, and lukewarm soup.
  • Skip straws, smoking, and hard rinsing to protect the blood clot and reduce the risk of dry socket.
  • Rest and avoid strenuous activity for a few days.
  • Take medications only as directed.
  • Start gentle warm salt-water rinses after the first day, or as instructed.

Most people feel noticeably better in three to five days. Call us right away if you notice worsening pain or swelling after day three, a fever, or bleeding that does not slow down.
