Planning Implants or Dentures? Check Your 2027 Medicare Dental Benefits First

Smiling Indianapolis senior planning dental implant or denture treatment

If you’ve been thinking about replacing missing teeth next year, the timing of that decision matters more than you might think. Medicare open enrollment runs from October 15 to December 7, and the plan you choose now decides what help you’ll get with dental bills in 2027.

The short version

Original Medicare doesn’t cover routine dental work, dentures or implants. Dental help for most seniors comes from Medicare Advantage plans, and those benefits vary a lot. Early reviews of 2027 plans suggest many insurers are reducing dental coverage, especially for major work. That’s exactly the category implants and dentures fall into.

Six things to check before you pick a plan

  1. The annual dental maximum. A $1,000 cap and a $3,000 cap make a huge difference when you’re replacing several teeth.
  2. Whether major services are covered at all. Some plans cover cleanings and X-rays only.
  3. Implant coverage specifically. Plenty of plans cover dentures but exclude implants.
  4. Waiting periods before major work is covered.
  5. Frequency limits, such as one new denture every five years.
  6. Network. Make sure your dentist is in network, or find out what you’d pay out of network.

Your plan’s Annual Notice of Change, mailed this fall, spells out what’s changing. Don’t toss it with the junk mail.

Implants, dentures or something in between?

Every mouth is different. Some patients do best with a traditional denture. Others want the stability of dental implants or a full-arch option like All-on-X, where a full set of teeth is anchored to a few implants. Implant-supported dentures are a popular middle ground: they snap into place, so there’s no slipping when you eat.

The right choice depends on your bone, your budget and how long you want the result to last. A cone beam CT scan at our office shows us exactly what we’re working with.

Get real numbers before Dec. 7

Here’s our suggestion: book a consultation now, before enrollment closes. We’ll examine your mouth, talk through options and give you a written estimate. Then you can compare plans using your actual treatment cost instead of guessing. If you aren’t covered, ask about our financing options.
